Goal Details: Complete the NH 48

Updated: Jul 29, 2021

Webster Cliffs after summitting Mt. Jackson

Background

The White Mountains of New Hampshire have 48 mountains that site about 4,000 feet of elevation (list found here). Summitting all of these mountains is often known as "completing the 48".

The "Why"

Growing up in New Hampshire I have always had a lot of pride in our mountainous terrain. I feel as though it is a right of passage to summit these peaks and complete the 48.

The mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club is to foster the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the outdoors. The AMC maintains over 300 miles of the Appalachian Trail, operates many mountain lodges and huts along this trail, and works to provide program and opportunities for people to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

The AMC was the original creator of the list of 48 in 1957 as a way to encourage hikers to explore the lesser-known peaks and trails in the White Mountains. The AMC's work on trails and in these areas makes it possible for us to explore and enjoy these areas responsibly.

Technicalities

Summit every single summit on the list of 48 4,000 footers in NH. No specific trail needs to be used to get to the summit without any additional aid (ex: ski lifts or auto roads).

Can be done in any season on foot or ski.

Multiple summits can be achieved within ridge traverses or other link-ups (aka. each does not have to be done from a lower elevation).
